Henry Clay (1777-1852) attended public school, then studied law with George Wythe in Richmond, VA, and at age twenty moved to Lexington, KY. He became US Secretary of State under John Quincy Adams but was an unsuccessful candidate for President in 1824, 1832, and 1844. A genius in the art of compromise, he helped engineer the Missouri Compromise.
